THE MACLEAN-ELTHAM ESSAY PRIZE IN ROMNEY STUDIES

Our Society was founded in 1994 to raise interest in the life and work of the painter George Romney (1734 - 1802). An Essay Prize has been established as a memorial to our founding chairman Barry Maclean Eltham. The Prize takes the place of the former Bursary. The Prize of £500 or $900 will be awarded for an original piece of research, which will be published by the Society subject to approval by the Editorial Board. The Society’s intention in creating the Prize is to offer a platform to students and academics/art historians in their first posts who may otherwise not have the opportunity to be published and to encourage those with an interest in the field.

The prize is offered on the following terms:

1. The essay is to be of 3,000-5000 words in length on the subject of Eighteenth Century arts associated with George Romney; to use and cite original sources; to be a work not published elsewhere; an Abstract of one A4 side to be submitted to the Committee for their consideration. The abstract should be accompanied by a reference from a tutor or other appropriate person.

2. The prize to be of £500 of which £350 will be paid on gaining the prize and £150 on completing the essay. In exceptional circumstances expenses will be paid.

3. The Society encourages informal discussion by an applicant with any proposals before a formal application for the Bursary is made. Contact may be made by email.

4. There is no deadline for applications for the award. These can be made at any time.

5. It is expected that the winning essay will be published under the title of “Prize Essay” in Transactions but the right is reserved to edit the essay before publication in conjunction with the essayist or not to publish. On publication there will be no extra fee.

Transactions is the academic journal of this Society and published annually. Back volumes of Transactions can be obtained from the above address. A complete list of contents of Transactions Volumes 1-12 can be found here.

Articles may be illustrated with photographs/figures which must be submitted with the final text. The number of illustrations is a matter for agreement between the Editor of Transactions and the writer. Charges in connection with illustration of such material will be paid by the Society.
